Bluetooth is a great technology, but it can't work miracles when there is a lot of electronic noise nearby. Make sure that "Show Input menu in menu bar" is enabled. In your instance, you need to tell OS X to forget the Bluetooth device so it won't auto connect to it.

If this solves the problem, it’s possible that your computer is recognizing a Bluetooth keyboard and prioritizing it over your USB keyboard. I uninstalled USB Overdrive and then followed the instructions here…finally, a successful pairing!
