Sometimes you can't check a specific document and other times you can't spell-check any documents. I suspect some registry entry has become corrupted. When you rename the template, Word will reset itself to the default settings.Because your global template file has your settings, I would rename the file to something like normalPRV.dot or normalPRV.dotm All versions have a spell check button right on the main toolbar.
