WMP will play the first 30 minutes or so without any problem. EDIT: it's broken, known issue, no workaround.
I do have "Media Player Classic", which came with a download of Combined Community Codec Pack, but that is unaffected by this issue. It takes just 2 minutes to sign up (and it's free!). I think it was something to do with the files themselves not having permissions for WMP to read the metadata or something, so I moved all my music to C:\Users\Public\Music. Utterly confusing for mplayer or VLC.
