Am running WMP 9 and noticed that the seek bar advances with MPEGs on the hard drive. Check if your file is damaged. Only if there are a significant number reports of the same issue would there be any likelihood of the problem being reported to the Windows Media Player product team. The straight forward solution other than using a decent player is to use a better codec pack - ffdshow, it feeds WMP through the operating system level.
