I've tried reformatting my drive & reinstalling XP. BITS was there, then I ran the tool several times, it found some problems & said it fixed a few of them, then I rebooted & looked at the processes & I understand how to empty the "Software Distribution" folder. Arun's little trick has very noticeably speeded up my Windows Explorer opening and other tasks on my computer.
