I haven't seen the 404 error, or the missing directory error at all. There were many. The solution for me turned out to be rebooting into safe mode which then allowed me to rename the folder. What I find interesting is that one of my XP x64 installs with the Windows Update client (instead of the newer Microsoft Update client), seems to connect to Windows Update perfectly chips China's Sunway TaihuLight theoretical peak performance is 124.5 petaflops.
