Sorry... Tried microsoft fixit...windows update engines....finally stumbled across this site while searching the internet. But at least it reported back the problems that it caused!! On all four machines that were purchased from the same hardware vendor (very different models), Windows Update broke.
Finally, others have reported that Windows Update is also failing on server versions of Windows. ran the CD that came with the Motherboard & installed all of the software for the chipset, VGA, etc. My computer wouldn't let me rename the C:\Windows\Software Distribution folder (due to the ReportingEvents.log file being in use) and so I created a new folder (named "Software Distribution NEW") and cut Thanks Arun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just spent the last hour in a chat session with somebody from Microsoft trying to convince me to pay them $100 to fix a problem with their stuff. I try various things, but the result is the same. I set BITS to start Automatically to see if that would help, but it didn't.I went to the Microsoft Update Catalog site & did a search for "Windows XP Critical Updates", Doesn't matter if I select Express or Custom, it is stuck for hours at "Checking for the latest updates for your computer".
There is a difference. i think you should just forget about that regkey.. I wiped out my BITS Service completely. Can you explain why its doing this and tell me how to fix the problem?
