I've heard from our Microsoft support partner that Microsoft are aware of this and are looking into it. Update As I think about, the windows update site works by running an ActiveX control. After doing that, the update system is kinda "reset" for lack of a better word. This is happening on both Standard and Web editions for us.

For me it seems the update issue is related to their web site only. Non_IT's workaround gets past the web page error.   4. The stop services, rename/delete SoftwareDistribution folder, the restart of services and using Windows updates (not Microsoft update) worked for a number of servers.
  5. Interestingly enough, though, right after copying and extracting files from the contents of the .cab files to see what the dates were, etc., Microsoft Update began to work again for me.
  6. It appears that muauth.cab is NOT specific to a particular workstation or OS; I have identical copies on our Server 2003 box and on an old XP machine.

  10. Except it won't actually connect to Windows Update, it connects to Microsoft Update, and it doesn't look like it's being re-directed. I have a feeling that this may be a regional problem.

The only other way to do it is to read through reams of ms knowledge base articles for Server 2003 to find everyone one that includes a windows update download, cross http://ict4m.org/windows-update/windows-update-update-not-working.php But I soon found that not to be the case, and today I noticed that it was affecting XP and Server 2003 too. At least one other person I know had noticed I can alsore-enable Microsoft Update on Windows Server 2003 machine but search process with IE is loop.(this issue solved by myself) After restore datetime, I can install updates by automatic update Microsoft likes WSUS because it cuts down on the number of users hitting the Windows Update site.  And that's what this post is really about.  Microsoft has been slowly moving everyone Windows Server 2003 Updates End Of Life

Removing the SoftwareDistribution folder and cycling the services did not work for me, as others have mentioned.
