But come... Good news: Microsoft offers free technical support for Windows Update and that support provided a solution to my problem. When I got there, the site gave me errors about not being able to find itself or some ridiculous MicroSoft thing. I had to use system restore repeatedly.

Bad news: Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, or one of the subsequent patches, breaks Windows Update. A case like this could easily cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Same results. Running all of the fixit and other fixes can break Windows update. It made such a mess of things, I had to restore my system to before that thing ran.
