Nothing was working. I'm totally stumped & I've already reinstalled XP several times with similar results, although if there are flaws in my method of installation or post installation, I could always try again. I see for about 1/2 second a flash of the Active X control that needs to be installed...but it disappears almost immediately and is replaced with a 404 error. Arun's little trick has very noticeably speeded up my Windows Explorer opening and other tasks on my computer.

I have tried setting all services to default like BlackViper says for XP Professional SP3 and all seem to be fine. It took at least 2 hours after following instructions on here.Now that I am back up to date I went ahead and saved with Seagate Disk Wizard (Acronis) backed-up the whole I had the same problem on a clean install of XP.

    Does that mean anything? Using the site is easy and fun. Good luck. both of those "services" have to be enabled in order for windows automatic updates to work, and for being able to use the "microsoft update" website to install windows updates..
